5 Benefits of Using Modafinil for Night Shift Performance

Shift work can lead to difficulties staying awake and falling asleep outside of work hours. Modafinil promotes wakefulness and enhances cognitive abilities to improve shift performance.

One study found that modafinil 200 australia significantly improved alertness and vigilance in subjects before their first night shift compared to placebo. However, they still experienced worrisome levels of sleepiness and attention impairment.

1. Improved Focus

While it’s true that modafinil can help you stay awake during long shifts, relying on a pill to meet deadlines isn’t the best idea. Instead, focus on improving your sleep habits so you can get enough rest and feel energized throughout the day.

Modafinil significantly improved cognitive and psychomotor performance on the Addition Task and DSST and lowered inadvertent sleep on the Sleep Questionnaire during shift work. These effects were most pronounced during the circadian phase shortly after the temperature minimum and were most apparent for modafinil-treated participants on the Addition Task.

Although modafinil produced few effects on Nightcap sleep measures during the shift, the largest dose significantly increased sleep onset latency on the first night of shift. It also reduced subjective disability during shifts lasting more than 9 h and attenuated shift change-related cognitive performance disruptions in a model that simulates abrupt shift changes.

2. Increased Energy

Touted as the “go-pill for shift workers,” modafinil can keep you awake and alert, enabling you to perform better than you would on a normal night of sleep. Its wake-promoting effects match those of stimulants like amphetamine and methylphenidate, although its structure is different from theirs.

In a study, participants were given either placebo or modafinil prior to each of three nights they worked on the night shift. Cognitive performance and subjective ratings of mood were significantly disrupted during the night shift, compared to day shift days.

Both low and high doses of Modalert 200 mg attenuated these night-shift disruptions. The highest dose also reversed time-on-task performance effects produced by sleep deprivation. These findings suggest that modafinil may help to prevent errors and accidents in shift work environments by enhancing cognitive performance.

3. Better Sleep

A long period of sleeplessness can increase the chances of making mistakes at work. This is especially true for doctors who may have to make judgement calls on a patient’s condition or perform medical procedures. Modafinil can help improve performance and alertness for shift workers who have trouble sleeping.

However, it is not a substitute for getting enough sleep, which will lead to better mental health and overall well-being. It is also important to avoid using modafinil to stay awake for too long. This can lead to addiction and other negative side effects.

In the study by Walsh et al, modafinil attenuated most night shift-related cognitive/psychomotor impairments in a dose-dependent manner. It also improved mood and reduced inadvertent sleep. The drug also increased tracking speed on a DSST and decreased error rates on the RIT.

4. Reduced Fatigue

Touted as “the smart drug” by entrepreneurs and millennials, modafinil is known to boost performance in all types of tasks. It’s wake-promoting effects match those of stimulants like amphetamine and methylphenidate, but it does so without the negative side effects of those drugs.

Prior to drug administration, participants showed cognitive and psychomotor impairments as a function of the night shift condition (eg, diminished learning on the Addition Task and impaired visuospatial processing on the DSST). These deficits were attenuated by both active doses of modafinil in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the 400-mg dose reversed fatigue, an effect that was especially salient during the circadian nadir of performance (06:00 through 10:00 on day 3).

5. Better Mood

Modafinil improves cognitive performance and vigilance in healthy non-sleep-deprived individuals. In one study, the drug enhanced digit span and visual recognition memory, as well as spatial planning and SSRT, without a speed-accuracy trade-off. In another study, it reduced inadvertent sleep and improved addition and reversal tasks.

When subjects’ sleep patterns were disrupted by a three-day shift change, both objective and subjective ratings of mood were impaired. In contrast, therapeutic doses of modafinil attenuated cognitive and mood disruptions during the night shift.
